How to Reorient Yourself When Life Flips Upside Down (going through a Life Reset)

2019 was a pivotal year for me. Moving from Colorado to Missouri I, quite literally, pressed RESET on my life.

It was March 2019. I was 48 years old, my son was getting ready to graduate high school, my husband lost his job, and we had recently sold everything in our house and were sleeping on a mattress on the floor. Both my husband and I had sensed strongly we were to step out in faith and move to Missouri. Our family knew NO ONE. Not a single person. However, in that March, we put up our condo in Colorado Springs for sale, hoped in the car and came to Branson, Missouri for a two-week stay, not even sure where to start. In that two weeks, we sold our condo, put an offer on a house west of Branson, and my husband started a new job. I returned to Colorado for two months to pack the rest of the house and close the sale, while my son finished school.

Spiritually, it was a monumental time as well. For the previous 4 years, I wrestled with God: redefining faith and relationship with the Most High and dealing with very deep and serious emotional and mental wounds. My entire world was topsy turvy and the dust wasn't even close to settling.

Frankly, I was ready for a reset.

In addition to this massive upheaval, had recently closed a women's boutique I owned in downtown Colorado Springs, I was financially struggling, there were severe personal issues and stresses I struggled to cope with, and I was questioning everything I knew about God. I needed some sort of relief; I just didn't expect it would come as a complete upheveal, like a box of puzzles pieces being tossed outside of a window. Only now I had to find all the pieces and then put it together—not even certain as to the picture it was intended to represent.

As impossible as it would be to recount this story within a short blog post, I will share a few things I learned as a result of having to pick up the pieces of my life and put together a new image of what it would look like.

UPSIDE DOWN RESET:

  • Never stop seeking God. (Matthew 6:33)

  • Be guarded in who you confide in (i.e. have only 1 or 2 wise, mature voices giving their input)

  • Resist fear and anxiety by reminding yourself that what you do today is preparation for tomorrow.

  • Let go. In other words, embrace different/doing things differently.

  • Pray constantly.

  • Read the word constantly.

  • Avoid mindless distractions (tv, scrolling social, etc). this time is crucial to learning to hear God's voice.

  • Journal daily

  • Be grateful for the past but then set your thoughts forward.

  • Repeat Matthew 6:33 all the time in your head.

  • Slow down. Get extra sleep.

  • Release yourself from every responsibility that you can (other than caring for your family). this is so important! there is a season for everything, but right now, you must be ready to move when God opens the door/the dust settles, etc; and your mind must be not be distracted.

There are seasons where everything changes. As long as we embrace the tossing around instead of fight it, we'll come out unscathed when the dust settles.

While it may be an unsettling time, full of unknowns, it's also very exciting! As Bilbo Baggins says, "I'm going on an adventure!"
